Sleeping Beauty's Wedding & Dance Classics

Based on the famous fairy tale by Charles Perrault, The Sleeping Beauty tells the story of the beautiful Princess Aurora, who is cursed at her christening by the wicked fairy, Carabosse, to prick her finger on a spindle and die. Through the goodness of the Lilac Fairy, instead of dying on her sixteenth birthday, Aurora falls in to an enchanted sleep for a hundred years until she is finally awoken by the kiss of Prince Désiré. Our ballet will feature what happens after the magic kiss brings her out of the one hundred year sleep, and the wedding celebration of Princess Aurora to Prince Désiré.

The ballet opens with the dancing stars and magical fairies bringing in the Lilac Fairy and the Prince to find Sleeping Beauty and awaken her with a kiss.

The Wedding of Prince Désiré and Princess Aurora takes place on the esplanade of King Florestan’s palace. The court assembles to celebrate the marriage of Prince Désiré and Princess Aurora. The Lilac Fairy starts the celebration by introducing the Ladies of the Court and Special Guests. The festivities feature a series of divertissements. The Lilac Fairy, along with the Diamond, Gold, Silver, and Sapphire Fairies, dance for the Court. Then several fairy tale characters join in the festivities: Puss in Boots and the White Cat; Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Cinderella and her Stepsisters, the Bluebird and Bluebird Princess, Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolf, and more. Princess Aurora dances a beautiful solo followed by a pas de deux featuring Princess Aurora and Prince Désiré. The act ends with a lively dance celebrating the marriage and the blessing of the sacred wedding by the Lilac Fairy.

Donations for Dancers!

Ten dancers from the Mendocino Ballet “Art of Classical Ballet” program have the opportunity to travel to France this summer for a Cultural Exchange experience! Students will visit Paris first to see the historical sights and enjoy an evening at a performance of the Paris Opera Ballet. Then they will travel to southern France to join in classes and learn choreography which will culminate in a performance in the 600-seat theater in Nerac. Artistic Director, Trudy McCreanor has been working with Helene Darroman, the director of L’Ecole de Danse at L’Espace d’Albret, since 2004.  The two have put together a special program to engage students in a comprehensive artistic endeavor between the two dance schools. Mendocino Ballet has hosted dancers from the French dance company while Mendocino Ballet students have traveled to France.  Dancers have only ten days of training together to create one full-length performance for the local community!

Each of the ten Mendocino Ballet Company students will need to raise about $2200 for the trip.  They are raising funds through various efforts and sponsorships. Most of these students have never traveled outside of the country and are excited to stay with French families as part of their cultural exchange. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for these students and life-long friendships are formed by being immersed with the French families.

We are seeking donations from our community, families and friends to help these dancers realize their dreams. Donations are tax-deductible as determined by law. You can make a donation by clicking the button below, or by mailing your donation to Mendocino Ballet, 205 South State Street, Ukiah, CA 95482.

Thank you so much for your support of these very special students! Partnerships between the arts and our community enrich and benefit each one of us!

Welcome to the Mendocino Ballet

The Mendocino Ballet offers a high quality dance program in a safe, positive, and non-competitive learning environment with an age-appropriate curriculum for all ages and levels.  Incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1985, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality professional dance instruction and performance opportunities in Mendocino County and surrounding areas.

Performance opportunities abound for students as well as community members.  With year-round classes for all ages from 3 through adult, we have a class for everyone. An active Outreach Program introduces dance history and the many benefits of dance and movement to school children and teachers from throughout the county.  Our instructors bring years of training, education and professional experience to the classroom.

A spring “Season of Dance” showcases Classical and Contemporary Ballet, Jazz, Modern Dance, and Tap as well as children's story ballets for School Tour and public performances.  “The Nutcracker” is performed each December and showcases local dance students and adult performers alongside members of the Mendocino Ballet Company.

Simply put, we provide the most comprehensive, professional dance program in the area with an emphasis on a positive experience for YOU and YOUR child!

"My daughter has been able to build and gain flexibility, self confidence, friendships, knowledge and courage through dancing at Mendocino Ballet."
